Two Irish vets brought to the island by HydraArk spayed/neutered and treated for infection and parasites 57 cats between Thursday and Sunday of last week: 29 were male and 27 were female. The association plans to continue bringing vets to the island every couple of months to help reduce the island's cat population, thereby reducing the number who become ill or starve over the winter months. We want to thank our vets, Margaret and Claire, for their tireless diligence and dedication.

This year, a gift membership to Hydra Ark will also be a gift for the animals of Hydra Island. For 25 euros, you can sign up a loved one and help the stray cats and dogs live through the winter. Hydra Ark will send a personalized e-mail or letter to each new member with his or her membership information.

Through the efforts of two devoted foster moms and other concerned friends, Lady will be leaving in a couple of weeks for her new home in Belgium. We'll miss her sweet face but are so relieved and happy that she's on her way to a safe and loving home.

Sweet puppy Bello (Lady's brother perhaps?) found a home with Anna Marie this summer. He adores his new mom and is rapidly learning Dutch.

Dear friends, If you hear of someone who would be able to adopt or at least shelter in his/her courtyard a sweet, elderly female cat, please let HydraArk know immediately (hydra.ark@gmail.com). We have named her Miaoula; she has only two teeth left and does not eat much. She is skinny and especially in need of love. She is staying in our courtyard for now and hasn't left for the past several weeks.

Hydra Ark is a charity that pursues the protection and assistance of stray animals on Hydra Island and aims at educating its community to respect and love animals.

Hydra Ark will assist in bringing veterinarians to the island in order to neuter, heal, and vaccinate cats. Thanks to the initiative and work of Theo (Kamini) and to the support of the Municipality and private donors, veterinarians have already been invited to Hydra for 2 and 3-week periods and have successfully neutered 220 cats, primarily in the Kamini area of town, but also in other parts of the island. You easily recognize neutered cats by the cut of the tip of their left ear, which is the sign internationally adopted by veterinarians in order to indicate that a cat has been operated. Also, we hope to end the practice of killing cats, through a campaign to increase awareness and sensitivity to all animals.

How you can help us:

1. Make a donation: Your donation will be used achieve our objectives and stop animal cruelty and suffering on Hydra.
2. Become a member: In order to become a member, you are required to make a minimum donation of 25 Euros and to communicate the intention to become part of the association by sending us the receipt of your payment to Hydra Ark by post or email.
3. Become a volunteer*: Help us catch cats for neutering, invite a vet to dinner, and if you have a house on Hydra, you can help the project by hosting our vets.
4. Adopt a cat, foster a cat, sponsor a cat* : The association is always looking for responsible people to adopt and care for our cats and dogs. One can also sponsor a cat or dog by providing food and treatment to the association.
5. Become a Business Member: If you own a business and would like to support Hydra Ark, your contribution of 250 Euros will be mentioned on our website and in the Newsletter.
