Places to Visit

Things to see and places to go

Hydra Island Greece is a sight seeing trip in its own right. It's on the itinerary for the three island cruise that stops off daily year round. But for those who are staying there are plenty of sights and museums to visit and the island is a great base if you want to take an excursion to the Peloponnese mainland to visit ancient Epidavros for some theatre.

Anastasios Tsamados Mansion Hydra Island Greece

Today housing the School of Merchant Marine of Hydra, the oldest school of its kind in Greece. Anastasios Tsamados was a heroic admiral who fell during the Greek War of Independence 1821.

It is a shame, but because it is an active school, it is not possible to see inside the building. However you can see it from the outside, dominating the east side of the harbour above the last shops on the harbour as you head towards the Archive Museum.

Georgios Voulgaris Mansion

Georgios Voulgaris was Governor of Hydra 1802-1812. He was responsible for building the wells at Kala Pigadia in 1803. Overlooking the west corner of Hydra Harbour.

Goroyannis Mansion at Kala Pigadia

Dating from about 1780 this is one of oldest Arkhontika (mansions) on Hydra. Built in Kala Pigadia (three wells) and probably completed in stages. This beautiful building is still in the hands of a private family. It's not possible to see inside, however the walk up Miaoulis Street from the centre of the harbour is well worth it because it's a very photogenic building and is right next to Kala Pigadi (good wells) and en-route to one of the closer monasteries.

Iacovos Tombazis Mansion

This massive four storied building on the west side of Hydra Harbour, today houses the annex of the School of Fine Arts of Athens. Iacovos Tombazi was the First Admiral of the fleet of Hydra (before Andreas Miaoulis). Very frustratingly, the building is closed to anyone who isn't a member of the School, so it's impossible to see inside.

Kala Pigadia (Good Wells)

The wells were built during the administration of Georgios Voulgaris in 1803 giving the area 'Kala Pigadia' its name. You'll find the wells in the centre of a huge courtyard surrounded by steps at the top of Miaoulis Street. As you will see from the photograph, the wells are still active and are widely used by the local residents, many of whom use it as a meeting place to exchange gossip.

Kamini Harbour

Approaching Kamini Harbour on coast road from Hydra TownApproaching Kamini Harbour on coast road from Hydra TownKamini is a short 15 minute walk heading west from Hydra town along the coast road. Some say that the name Kamini meaning 'kiln' has given the area its name as a lot of pottery making was carried out in this area.

Lazaros Koundouriotis Mansion

Lazaros Koundouriotis fought during the Greek War of Independence 1821 and is called "the Father of the Nation".

Architecturally, this is a superb example of a grand house in the true 1800's style on Hydra. When the last Koundouriotis decendent died, the building passed to a trust organisation who now administer it. They have done a fantastic job.

The building is laid out much as it would have been when it was a functioning home. Throughout there are exhibits appropriate to each room.

The curator, Mrs Anne-Maria Rabias, is very knowledgeable about the history of the building. She and her staff are always on hand to answer questions.

Monastery of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary

Hydra's Cathedral, built at the end of the 18th century. The Cathedral is entered via the arch under the bell and clock tower. Today the cloisters surrounding the Cathedral, house various civic offices and the Cathedral Museum.

The Cathedral is the focal point for the Greek Orthodox Church on Hydra. All dates in the religious calendar and pastoral services are celebrated in the church with the exception of marriages because it is designated as a monastary. So local can be baptised or buried but not wedded.

Rafalias Pharmacy

Rafalias PharmacyRafalias PharmacyQuote from the Government Gazette of Greek Democracy:

‘Rafalias pharmacy is a work of art and historical conserved monument and we define a zone for their protection within the property limits because:

Rafalia’s mansion is an important early neoclassical building with notable morphologic elements on its faces and interior. It is also a remarkable building about island history as it has been the home of the historical Rafalias family.
