I find it difficult not to be overly lyrical about the Hydra Windmill. It really is a stunning and unique holiday rental that can't fail to delight. I have known Maria, the owner of the mill, since 2000 and each year she seems to have added little touches somehow making perfection even more perfect. As a honeymoon retreat, it is utterly romantic. If you like walking, you will find the mill convenient starting point for lots of trails. If you're an artist or photographer, the changing light, stunning colours and breathtaking vistas will keep you so busy that you really won't want to leave such inspiration behind.
If possible, it is even more stunning than the photos portray and from the moment you arrive to Maria's wonderfully warm welcome you realise you have indeed arrived in paradise. The mill is simply and stunningly decorated, spotlessly clean and well equipped. There are numerous places to relax outside, both shady and sunny, the swimming pool is gorgeous, the views incredible and there is complete privacy. Maria arranges for your luggage to be transported by mule on arrival and departure and your weekly shopping becomes an adventure rather than a chore because the supermarket delivers your shopping on mules too!
Ground Floor Living Space
The ground floor of the windmill provides the main living space with a dining table to seat up to 6 people (for times when you might have guests) and a simply but well equipped kitchen. In addition to the electric hob and fridge/freezer, Maria also provides a coffee maker, kettle and plenty of cooking utensils and tableware. For your entertainment, you will find books, games, cards and a DVD, CD and radio in addition to there being satellite TV and excellent WiFi internet. There is also a telephone for you to use for incoming calls or to make local calls to reserve a table at a restaurant.
The Middle Floor Bunk Room
A spiral staircase takes you up to the second floor where you will find the Bunk Bedroom with an ensuite shower room. The beds are strong, full-sized single beds that are as comfortable for adults as they are for children.
Top Floor Master Bedroom
The spiral staircase continues up to the top floor which is the master bedroom with en-suite shower and a queen-size double bed.
Naturally Cool
The mill has stone walls that are nearly a meter deep with small windows, stone floors and ceilings made of traditional beam & reed that are half a meter deep. This traditional construction along with the gentle sea breezes, ensure that the interior summer temperatures are at least 10 degrees lower than outside. And for those who want to reduce the temperature further, there are also fans.
The deep-set windows on each floor provide picture postcard views from every angle, even from the kitchen window!
Garden, Views & Swimming Pool
The garden of the mill is a delightful mix of trees, native shrubs, colourful plants and herb bushes that provide cooling shade and beautifully scented air.
There are terraces where you can sunbathe as well as comfortable seating in the shade where you can siesta or read a book out of the glaring sun.
I look forward to welcoming you to Hydra and the Hydra Windmill soon.
