Hydra town is a glorious tangle of little streets and quirky corners that makes the town feel like a maze. Expect it to take longer to 'pop out' for something as you're bound to lose your bearings to start with!.
The Eastside (great for sunsets) and Westside (much cooler in the afternoons during summer) of the harbour are technically counted as Hydra Town as soon as you take a step off the level part of the harbour front.
More coming soon!
Hydra Town fans back from the harbour on four main routes.
Lignou Street
The most notorious is Lignou Street. A misnomer if ever there was because it's a continuous staircase rather than a street. It starts from the back of the Pirate Bar in the West corner of the harbour and goes up almost in a straight line to Kiafa at the top.
It's the main arterial route for supplies being taken between Hydra harbour and Kamini. Ten o'clock on a Wednesday or Saturday morning is a good time to sit for half an hour on the bougainvillea terrace to watch Hydra's version of a traffic jam. Delivery days mean mules trains sometimes get grid locked.
Lignou Street was nicknamed 'Donkey Shit Lane' back in the 60s when there was no law to insist that muleteers should 'poop scoop' behind their steads. Happily these days there's no poop but the cheeky name has stuck.
