Full Description

Lemon Tree House is a traditional, country style, Hydra Island house to rent for holidays so you can experience real Hydra living. Available for 4 people to share in comfort for a minimum of 7 nights. There is a high degree of privacy because the bedrooms are in separate parts of the house, so it's ideal for 2 couples to share.

With 2 double bedrooms with queen-size double beds, 2 shower rooms, well equipped kitchen, washing machine and laundry care, plenty of space to spread out, a shady garden and two sun terraces in a pretty area offering stunning view. There are fans as well as air-conditioning so you have the option to use natural cooling if you prefer.

From the glare of pristine white-washed lanes, through the bougainvillea shrouded street entrance, the cool, shady, serenity of the walled garden at 'Lemon Tree House' is most welcoming and immediately you will feel yourself start to unwind.

Garden Bedroom - Garden Side

The house is a traditional Hydra L-Shape that embraces the garden. It is on one floor but the main part (the long side) is slightly higher so it looks down into the garden. The shorter part of the L is accessed from the lower part of the garden. In this garden side of the house you will find a Garden Bedroom with double bed and en-suite shower.

The Garden Bedroom has a queen-size double bed, air-conditioning, fan, fly-screen to the window, hanging space, drawers and an en-suite shower room with hand-basin, mirror, WC and shower. This is a spacious room decorated with paintings by local artists. The door opens to the garden.

The Main Floor Rooms

The main floor rooms are in the longer part of the L and each room is interconnected, so you walk through internally or you can access them from outside. There is a sitting room, an entrance room, a double bedroom and in the corner of the L-Shape, a kitchen. From the kitchen there is a family shower and utility room which you can walk through to reach a very private sunbathing terrace (above the garden bedroom). The main floor also has fans as well as air-conditioning.

Garden steps up to sitting room entrance, then along to stairs up to roof terrace, kitchen entrance in the far corner.

Kitchen

The kitchen is the hub of the house in the corner of the L-Shape. It is equipped with free standing units, plenty of cupboard space, a fridge with freezer compartment, stainless steel sink, small electric oven and hob, a kettle, toaster and coffee making machine. You will find plenty of cooking utensils, pots and saucepans etc.

Family Bathroom

Off the kitchen, you will find a good sized family shower room with WC and hand basin with lighting and a mirror above, plus a washing machine for you to use during your stay. This shower room also has access to the small roof terrace (over the Garden Bedroom) where sunbathing is totally private and you can enjoy spectacular inland views while you are tanning.

Upper Double Bedroom

From the kitchen, a few steps lead to the Upper Double Bedroom, This is a spacious, cool room with a queen-size double bed. It has air-conditioning if the fan isn't sufficient. (The family bathroom for this bedroom is just a short step across the kitchen.) You will find plenty of wardrobe space and the novelty of a traditional fireplace in the corner and pretty views overlooking the vines and lemon trees in the garden and across the inland valley views.

Sitting Room

The sitting room is a comfortable space to 'chill out' for an afternoon siesta or to snuggle up round the open fireplace in the winter months. There's a TV and music system for you to use - bring your favorite music on a stick or CD, and to one corner there is a desk for your laptop if you want to keep in touch with the office or write your memoirs! There is of course air-conditioning, fan and full wifi access.

Roof Terrace

The owner of Lemon Tree House has been developed the flat roof into a gorgeous additional sitting area either to enjoy sunbathing or a drink under the stars.

The views from the roof terrace are stunning. You can see the inland mountains and most of Kamini spread before you to one side and the path down to your closest swimming area at Avlaki on the other side - with sea glimpses to tempt you out.

The Garden

As to be expected from the house name, there are multiple lemon trees in the garden and when they are 'fruiting' you are welcome to pick and enjoy them. There is also a grape vine and many flowering and scented shrubs.

Under the vine you will find a dining table (in the kitchen you will find plenty of popup nets to cover food) which comfortably seats everyone plus a couple of deck chairs. There is a fully working, traditional flat bottomed sink for easy washing up, and space to prepare BBQ's. The old traditional oven in the corner of the garden is the original but isn't in working condition but left for decorative purposes!

Location & Neighbourhood

The Lemon Tree House is situated in a residential area known as the Kamini/Avlaki ridge which is convenient for both visiting the beach area of Avlaki to one side and going down to Hydra Town or inland Kamini on the other side.

When you arrive at the port, you will be met and mules arranged to carry your luggage to the house. Please note that each mule will cost you €10 and this is paid directly to the muleteer. The route up to the house will be via the inland road/steps along Lignou Street (historically known as Donkey Shit Lane by expats from the days before pooper-scouping behind donkeys was made law!). You will pass the house owned by Leonard Cohen as well as the closest grocery/provisions store called Four Corners. The Lemon Tree House to rent for holidays in Hydra, is another 100 meters further along the little lanes beyond the store. Please note that Four Corners is your closest shop and that Maria and Dimitris know exactly where the house is so you can buy your food/drink for the week and they will deliver it for you so you don't have to carry your shopping.

A little further down in the inland side of the valley below the house, you will find the popular Pirofani restaurant where Theo serves internationally tweaked Greek dishes for you to enjoy in his taverna style courtyard.

If you fancy something more upmarket, there is the Techne Restaurant (opened in 2016) overlooking Avlaki which is proving to be a very popular restaurant especially if you are looking for one where you can 'dress up' for a more glitzy evening.

The closest place of interest and well worth visiting, is the Kountouriotis Mansion, where you will find a lot of information about what it was like to live in Hydra 200 years ago. And for those who want to explore Hydra's countryside there are many hiking routes or you can contact Harriet of Harriet's Hydra Horses who is an English resident of Hydra who operates a horse trekking business on the island.

Lemon Tree House is very much a personal, private home and many of the owners belongings are available for you to use so it is appreciated if you could treat everything with care and respect as you would if it were your own. The house is cleaned and prepared for guests in advance of arrival. Guests are respectfully asked to return any furniture moved during their stay to original positions and to leave the property as they found it.

The house has a correct EOT license to be rented for holiday lets and as such you will be asked, on arrival, to produce your passport which will be copied and submitted with a copy invoice to the Greek authorities so everything is done properly.
