Over the past fifty years the paintings and sculptures of Michael Lawrence have illuminated one-pereson gallery shows in Los Angeles, New York City, Palo Alto, Denver and in Europe: Rome, Madrid, Stockholm, Belfast, Hydra Island and sprinkled in collections in London, Austria, Australia, India, Singapore and elsewhere.
His first exhibition took place in Rome, Italy in 1957 at the age of eleven. Inspired by Chaplin's ballet 'Modern Times' and the colour in Picasso's 1937 portrait of Marie Terese Walter, Michael informed his mother he preferred to paint from his imagination.
Enthusiastic collectors emerge from all levels of society. Queen Elizabeth II and filmmaker Oliver Stone join hundreds of people in gaining pleasure from Michael's joyful celebrations.
Sharing a deep friendship with Jim Morrison at UCLA provided amusing material for a memoir composed in 1981 and published in 2003. Michael's book covers his adventures up to his twenty-fifth year when he returns to the United States after a three year sojourn in Spain. Between amorous liaisons he writes articles on artists in Madrid, creates the polished bronze sculptures for the titles of the film 'The Royal Hunt For The Sun' and a series of lithographs and bronze figurines that compose his 'James Joyce Exhibition' at the Sequier Gallery in 1968 in Madrid.

In 1992, Michael came to Hydra and fell in love with the purity of the island! Carrying a collection of works on paper based on Henry Miller's 'Colossus of Maroussi', which he had exhibited in Sweden and France, he journeyed to Hydra wanting to experience the real Greece!
On Hydra Michael has prepared 14 one person exhibitions since 1992 at the Melina Mercouri Exhibition Hall! Each exhibition exploring Hydra in a different manner. Landscapes, portraits, and romantic surreal combinations in numerous materials including bronze, oil colors, acrylics, and watercolors of various sizes owe their bearable lightness of being to Hydra's ever changing influences!
His work is in numerous collections on the island including our own Lazarus Kountouriotis Mansion Museum, Hydra Archives Museum and the City Hall offices.
